Dorothea's Project Legacy is a community program developed in memory of GIBTK president Robert Kalatschan’s late wife, Dorothea Kalatschan. Dorothea had a dream to create a safe place where disadvantaged children in the community could come to play, study, and reach their full potential.
In May 2016, GIBTK collaborated with the Children's Rights Protection and Charity Association in Da Nang to launch the program. Legacy 1 was created with the goal of cultivating the knowledge, life skills, and mental health of disadvantaged children and teens in Da Nang.
Since opening, Legacy 1 has had a profound impact on students in the community. Following the success of Legacy 1, GIBTK expanded to create Legacy 2, Legacy 3, and Legacy 4. Legacy 5 is coming soon. At each Legacy location, students from the community can participate in free math, English, physics, chemistry, computer science, emotional health, and life skills classes. Additionally, students can participate in STEM activities. STEM activities give students the opportunity to have in-field experiences that help in the development of social skills, and creative thinking.
The teachers at Legacy organize career orientation sessions for high school students after school hours to help students learn about career options, identify their interests, and prepare them to choose a career path. If a student from a Legacy passes a university entrance exam but their family is unable to cover tuition costs, GIBTK will provide funding to help the student pursue higher education.”
